What is a Life Coach?
A Life coach is your personal collaborator that you hire to assist you to set and achieve specific goals in your life or relationships. With your goals in mind your coach will work with you to determine what’s working and what’s not working, and will guide you in mapping out a plan that will help you realize the goals you’ve set. By collaborating with your coach you will be able to experiment with different perspectives and get a clear picture and understanding of the emotions, attitude, thoughts, and actions you will need to adopt to reach your goals. Once on track, your coach is there to inspire you and hold you accountable for continuing to take the steps that will enable you to reach your goals.
Coaching vs. Counseling
Therapy or counseling typically looks at what is wrong in a client’s life and how unresolved issues from the past contribute to their current situation. The counsellor will typically give their client insight and direction for overcoming the issues the client is dealing with based on the counselors experience and training. Coaching on the other hand, is not designed to be an “expert, non-expert” type of relationship. It is more of a partnership where the coach guides the client in discovering what their passions and goals are, and then helps them create specific action steps to get them from where they are to where they want to be. While the past may be discussed on occasion, it is addressed only in the context of discovering what is blocking the client from moving forward and attaining the changes in their life that they seek. The focus is always on the client moving forward and taking steps to achieve their goals. The bottom line is that coaching is not counseling or therapy.
As your coach, I am working from the assumption that you are a healthy, emotionally stable individual who just needs help getting past an obstacle, out of a rut, or you desire to enhance relationship skills such as communication. The coaching relationship is also free of judgement or condemnation. My only goal is to help you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself or your relationship and to realize your goals for the future.
